The archipelago of Indonesia, consisting of more than 18,307 islands is known for its rich natural resources. In the 16th century, the Portuguese arrived in Maluku, an island known as ‘Spice Islands’ because of its abudant spices like nutmeg, cloves, and club pepper. Those spices would then become some of the fundamental ingredients used to create ‘sambal’. Sambal is not exclusively enjoyed in Indonesia, but Palate is created to promote and unite the diverse Indonesian culture through culinary. Uniting the diverse culture and taste of each sambal, while highlighting the subtle uniqueness. Indonesia is not only rich in spices, it is also home to many endemic birds. Line drawings of the endemic birds are used as a way to code the different types and origin region of sambal, while promoting the natural beauty of the archipelago.
A clear glass material lets the actual sambal play a role to entice people’s appetite. In consideration of non-native speakers, Palate uses numbers to code the different sambal types.
